Beach Clean Up Committee: Organize a calendar of clean up events in the region including 3x a year down in Bradenton for our adopted beach. Get permits if needed, bags, gloves, water. Promote the event and talk to surf shops and/or local businesses about donating their time or items. Talk to other environmental groups about participating or holding a joint event. Send a budget to the treasurer so if needed he can provide funds.
Fund Raising Committee: Come up with fun ways to raise funds to support the chapter’s efforts. Promote the event. Be responsible for all money while its being collected and counted and turn it over to the treasurer for deposit.
LocalS Committee: Work with Thomas on promoting and distributing the LocalS Campaign to better the vibe in the surf.
Rise Above Plastics Committee: National Surfrider Foundation began the Rise Above Plastics campaign in 2008. Several California Surfrider Chapters sucessfully lead the way through online blogs, videos and tool kits to help other chapters along through the beginning, middle and end of the plastics campaign. Using their guidelines and the creative thinking from our own talented pool of members the chapter can begin to take an active step towards eliminating the use of single use plastics in our region. Come up with a catch phrase to stoke up the chapter. Plan the campaign. Research, as a group, on the effects of plastic on the local environment. Set long term and short term goals for the chapter to meet. Design positive events to promote the use of re-useable bags and recycling plastic bags. Speak to the public and to public officials in reference to this issue when the time comes. Get re-useable bags printed with SF logo. Find out what other orgs in area have an anti-plastic campaign going and approach them about aligning with them on an event.
Upham Beach Committee: Based on what’s decided at the next chapter meeting, we need activists to focus their attention on that beach and those geo-tubes. Surfrider National’s stance (which we should hear more at the meeting) is NO Tubes, nothing else in their place.
Tabling Events: All the other committees are going to want to have the chapter’s table tent and flags at some of their events. Work as a group and be responsible for the equipment, take it to the event, set it up, lay out the table with Surfrider gear and information and be prepared to inform the public about SF. If it’s a long event, set up a time schedule, talk to members about getting involved, and break the day down in to shifts. Pack it all up at the end. As a note: Janus Landing and St. Pete Times Forum has allowed Suncoast to have a table at concerts in the past. With plenty of notice of an upcoming band it maybe possible to table a concert.
Blue Water Task Force: FOUND LAB SPACE to conduct regular water quality testing of our coasts.
