Action Alert

Dear Suncoast Chapter Members,

Through your continued support we have achieved great success in securing strong fertilizer management ordinances along the southwest gulf coast of Florida.

In the past two years the passage of 10 municipal and county level ordinances from Naples to St. Petersburg were made possible by a community's unfettered right to establish and implement meaningful fertilizer management standards.

However, we are now faced with a possible roadblock to the adoption of additional residential fertilizer ordinances in the Tampa Bay region and beyond.

It is unclear whether a new bill, SB 494, will allow communities the same freedom to adopt strong fertilizer ordinances as those implemented along the southwest gulf coast.

The bill has the potential to hinder the effective management of urban fertilizers and the protection of water resources by:

1) Promoting and mandating a weak model ordinance that is NOT based on water quality science.

2) Creating a legal basis for opponents of strong fertilizer management standards to challenge and prevent the implementation of more stringent standards.

For these reasons the chapter has submitted communication to Governor Crist urging him to veto SB 494.

We ask you, as a stakeholder, to please send your own comments to Governor Crist.

Please call or email Governor Crist at 850-488-7146 or charlie.crist@myflorida.com to urge him to make sure the right to prevent and reduce nutrient pollution is retained by Florida communities.

We cannot afford to lose the right to protect our valuable water resources – they are the life blood of the Sunshine State.

Thank you so much. Your participation now can make the critical difference in whether or not communities have the right to prevent and reduce nutrient pollution and safeguard their water resources, their local economy and their tax dollars.

Fertilizer Ordinance

Many of you may have heard that we have acheived a milestone in the City of St. Petersburg.  For the first time - EVER - an ordinance was unanimously voted in to include the ban on sale of fertilizer in the rainy season.  The Suncoast Sierra Club has made great strides and the Suncoast Surfrider Chapter is in full support.

Please take the time to emai the City of St Petersburg elected officials and thank them for their valiant effort.

Also, pleas take the time to email Pinellas County Officals that we want the same restrictionsfor the County - only enforceable!

Save Our Waterfront

Many moons ago our chapter voted not to build on the St Pete side of Tampa Bay.  We supported an organization entiled POWW.  They have continued their work in the form of creating a petition to place a City of St Petersburg Chater Amendment to Ballot this November.

April 2009, the City Council voted unanimously sending the charter to workshop.  There they will fine tune the wording.

Please email the City of St Petersburg elected Officals in support of our right to our waterfront poperty and thank them for their decision.
